The owners of this 1893 Queen Anne residence in Geneva, Illinois, known as the Crichton House, wished to expand the small compartmentalized home to accommodate additional first floor living space with a second floor master suite. On a tight site the project developed as an extension to the rear of the residence. On the first floor a small family room with a side entry was converted into a mudroom with a pantry. This converted space then opened to a new family room with an heirloom mantle kept by the owners for some 20 plus years for eventual use in this project. The family room ceiling is adorned with wood beams and a bay to accommodate a seating area for family games and casual dining. The second floor converts an existing large bathroom into a more efficient hall bath allowing for a hallway into a new master suite. The suite includes a walk-in closet and a master bath. The master bath is very special as a repurposed claw foot tub is placed into a cantilevered bay with a barrel vaulted ceiling centered on the tub. This project received a Preservation Award through the City of Geneva Preservation Commission and received a State of Illinois Tax Freeze, securing in the Owner’s property tax for the next eight years.
