The DESCRIPTION

The owners initially set out to rebuild their front entry canopy and deck but during the demolition/restoration process discovered significant structural issues.  The state of the existing construction led to the eventual conclusion that everything had to be removed and in its place a new wrap around screen porch with a second floor deck.

The existing home is a stately Arts and Crafts structure dating from around 1915.  The porch details tie directly to common themes in Arts and Crafts construction. Tapered columns sit on boxed out wood bases that act as large newel posts separating spans of wood sided knee walls.  These knee walls step down to allow for balusters and rails that tie into the column base caps.  The porch roof extends dramatically beyond the column line matching the roof extensions of the main residence roofs above.  All of these details create a seamless addition with a soft inviting edge to what was previously a rather stark and harsh face of the home.
